White House Calls Houston Lawmaker ‘pathetic' for Pushing Trump Impeachment

WASHINGTON -- The White House called a Houston Democrat "pathetic" Wednesday after he called Donald Trump "unfit to be president" and took to the House floor demanding impeachment.Rep. Al Green has vowed to push impeachment since at least May, when Trump fired James Comey as FBI director.But when he had the chance to formally submit articles of impeachment and force a House vote, he backed off abruptly - though not before taking the House floor to assert that Trump "incited bigotry" and is "fueling an alt-right hate machine."Fellow Democrats reportedly were unhappy about a maneuver that was doomed to fail. And a Green aide conceded that Republicans would have shot it down.Under House rules, any member can force a vote on a "privileged resolution" within two days. House leaders granted Green floor time on that basis, and he spoke for nearly 20 minutes, reading statements and tweets by Trump regarding Puerto Rico, a proposed travel ban, and transgender people serving in the military.Reading from his draft articles of impeachment, Green said the president "undermined the integrity of his office with impunity and has brought disrepute on the presidency with immunity.
