Texas Mayor – a Teacher – Banning STAAR in His City as a ‘peaceful Protest’

It started out as a joke for frustrated teacher Steve Horelica: prohibit STAAR tests within the city of Devers. In January, Horelica posted a fake proclamation on Facebook banning the high-stakes tests in the small southeast Texas town where he also serves as mayor. He was tired of the "madness" leading up to the assessments that he said does little to show what kids actually learn. Now Tuesday night, Horelica will officially issue his proclamation banning the State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness, or STAAR, in his city just east of Houston.  Continue reading...
