Teen Girls Host Quinceanera at the Capitol to Protest Sanctuary Cities Ban

AUSTIN — Dressed in bright red, pink, peach and green dresses and wearing sashes that read "No hate," "Equality" and "United Families," 15 young girls held a quinceañera to protest the state's sanctuary cities ban Wednesday on the Capitol steps.A quinceañera is a coming-of-age celebration in many Latin American countries, similar to a sweet sixteen party in the United States. They are often grand affairs with formal dresses and large celebrations. "In Latino culture, quinceañeras are an important tradition to bring families together to unite communities, to unite culture," said Magdalena Juarez, one of the girls who participated in the event.
