Sherin Mathews' Death Shows CPS Is Far From Fixed — and May Never Be

They are the eight chilling words all too familiar when it comes to the state's Child Protective Services: How did this child slip through the cracks?That question is almost always accompanied by the grim news that another Texas youngster has died because of abuse or neglect. And the best answer that the long-troubled CPS agency can provide is not really an answer at all, just a vow to try to do better.That response is unsatisfying, if not pathetic.
