San Antonio Sen. Carlos Uresti Found Guilty on 11 Felony Criminal Fraud Charges

AUSTIN — Sen. Carlos Uresti was found guilty Thursday of criminal fraud charges that could cost him millions of dollars in fines and send him to prison for years.It took the jury around 11 hours over two days to reach a verdict, the San Antonio Express-News reported.The San Antonio Democrat can keep his seat while he appeals the convictions, but will no longer be able to serve in the Legislature if he loses. Uresti was indicted last year on five counts of wire fraud, one count of conspiracy to commit wire fraud, one count of conspiracy to launder money, two counts of securities fraud, one count of engaging in monetary transactions in property derived from specified unlawful activity and one count of acting as an unregistered securities broker. He faces millions of dollars in maximum fines and over 100 years in prison.According to the Texas Tribune, Uresti is free on bond until June 25, when a hearing is tentatively set for the judge to determine sentencing.
