Rick Perry's Energy Department Dubs Liquefied Natural Gas as ‘freedom Gas'

WASHINGTON — At Rick Perry's Energy Department, liquefied natural gas now has a patriotic pseudonym: "freedom gas."The new nickname was revealed on Wednesday by one of the former Texas governor's under secretaries, Mark Menezes, who used the phrase in a mostly mundane Energy Department news release about expanding LNG exports from a southeast Texas terminal."Increasing export capacity from the Freeport LNG project is critical to spreading freedom gas throughout the world by giving America's allies a diverse and affordable source of clean energy," Menezes said.And "freedom gas" wasn't the only rhetorical flourish in the news release, which was first spotted by journalists at E&E News and elsewhere.Steven Winberg, an Energy Department assistant secretary, went a step further in re-branding liquefied natural gas by touting an "efficient regulatory system that allows for molecules of U.S. freedom to be exported to the world."  Continue reading...
