Residents Safely Evacuated as Fire Burns Through Lake Highlands Apartment Complex

Eight apartment units burned in a fire Friday morning in Lake Highlands, but all the residents were safely evacuated, Dallas Fire-Rescue reported.The fire broke out at 2:19 a.m. at the Del Rey Village Apartments in the 9600 block of Wickersham Road.Firefighters arrived to find heavy fire coming through the roof of the two-story apartment building as the blaze quickly escalated to three alarms, Dallas Fire-Rescue spokesman Jason Evans said.It took firefighters a couple of hours to extinguish the fire, Evans said.Half of the 16 units took direct fire damage, Evans said, while the remaining eight units took on smoke and water damage.No one was injured, but the American Red Cross is assisting an unknown number of residents who were displaced.Investigators believe the fire started in a second-floor unit, but the exact cause hasn't been determined, Evans said.  Continue reading...
