Questions Linger in Fatal Shooting by Troopers as Council Member Urges Release of Body Cam Footage

Questions remain nearly two days after two troopers were involved in the shooting death of a driver in South Dallas.Texas Department of Public Safety officials have declined to release the names of the troopers who shot the driver on Saturday night. In a statement, DPS said the driver “pulled a handgun on the troopers as they approached” after a five-minute pursuit. As of Monday, the driver also had not been identified. Troopers have been deployed in high-crime Dallas neighborhoods since May after a significant spike in homicides prompted Gov. Greg. Abbott to send them to help officers tackle violent crime. The Dallas Police Department, who has led the operation with the troopers, has deferred questions about the shooting investigation.The shooting comes weeks after South Dallas residents complained troopers were unfairly targeting the community with petty traffic enforcement. Council member Adam Bazaldua, who represents South Dallas, said on Monday he is putting his “faith in the process” of the investigation. He said officials told him there was footage of the shooting from an officer’s body cam. “I’m hoping we can count on transparency from the Texas Rangers for that to be released to the public,” Bazaldua said.   Continue reading...
