On the Move: Property Tax Cap Bill Debated in Senate Committee Today. Will It Advance?

AUSTIN -- A bill to cap property tax revenue for school districts and local governments is getting its first hearing today at the Texas Capitol in a Senate committee made up of members who are mostly proponents of the bill. Senate Bill 2, authored by Houston Republican Sen. Paul Bettencourt, would cap property tax growth for the local taxing entities at 2.5 percent per year. For local governments, excluding schools, the growth cap is currently set at 8 percent.
