In Pearland, Volunteer Firefighters Answer the Call to Evacuate Stranded Mobile Home Park

PEARLAND — The County Road 143 Volunteer Fire Department got its first call about a water rescue at 4:30 a.m. Sunday.The first crew of the 17-person volunteer department set off for Pearland Acres Mobile Home Community a few minutes later. They were there the rest of the day, pulling out senior citizens, children and beloved family dogs from flooding homes.By about noon, water in the area had started creeping into some homes, which are lifted about 4 feet off the ground. Some surrounding county roads were impassable after being completely overrun with water. A couple of Ford Mustangs stood submerged in water.The mobile home community about 30 miles south of Houston was caught mostly unprepared for the torrential rain and heavy winds that Hurricane Harvey brought as it barreled past Pearland and devastated Houston.
