Grapevine High Student Disciplined for ‘racially Insensitive' Text Message

A Grapevine High School student is being disciplined for making "racially insensitive" comments in a group text message, the Grapevine-Colleyville school district said in a statement Tuesday.The student's comments, which were being circulated in a screenshot on social media this week, contained the N-word, alluded to "black families" and called them "ghetto." The comments appeared to be in reference to a recent basketball game between Grapevine High School and Fort Worth Eastern Hills High School. One of the messages said, "39-42 highlanderd." Eastern Hills' mascot is the Highlanders, and the two schools played each other Friday. School district officials could not confirm or deny the comments because of student privacy laws, spokesman Rick Hadley said. Hadley also could not reveal the student's punishment. In its statement, the district said school administrators "were made aware of a screenshot being circulated on Twitter in which one student used language in a group text message that is racially insensitive, offensive and unacceptable." School officials confirmed that the student used the offensive language, the district's statement said. "We are embarrassed by these comments, strongly condemn them and will not tolerate this kind of behavior," the statement said.   Continue reading...
