Fort Worth Man Suspected of Killing His 2 Young Children Found in Burning Vehicle

A Fort Worth man found dead Monday is suspected of killing his two young children, whose bodies were found in a burning car the day before, authorities say. The Cooke County Sheriff's Office had been searching for 37-year-old Mandeep Singh in connection with the children's deaths. On Monday afternoon, the office confirmed it found Singh's body in a wooded area.Sheriff Terry Gilbert said in a news release Tuesday that the bodies found in the car had been identified as Singh's young children: Aijit Singh Birring, a 4-year-old boy, and Mehar Kaur Birring, a 3-year-old girl.Singh appeared to have died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, Gilbert said. The children's causes of death are still unknown. Officials were called Sunday to the 10000 block of County Road 417 north of the town of Muenster, where a car was burning in the middle of the roadway. Firefighters found the remains of the two children inside.Authorities believe the fire was intentionally set and are investigating Singh's and his children's deaths as a murder-suicide, the sheriff's office said.A spokeswoman for the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services said Aijit and Mehar were Singh's only two children. The agency previously had contact with the family more than a year ago, she said, but that interaction did not involve injuries to the children. In October 2016, Singh was arrested on a family-violence assault charge. He was accused of hitting his wife, according to Fort Worth police records. He received 15 months of deferred-adjudication probation for the charge, according to Tarrant County court records. The woman filed for divorce in 2017, and the proceedings were finalized the following year.
