Fort Worth Man Fatally Punched 1-year-old Boy Because He Was Crying, Police Say

A Fort Worth man has been charged with murdering a 1-year-old boy whom police say he admitted punching in the head because he was crying.Derrick Pete Silva, 21, was arrested Thursday on a count of capital murder of a person younger than 10. He was being held Friday at the Tarrant County jail, with bail set at $100,000.Authorities started investigating after Armando Jose Soto suffered a seizure Nov. 19 at an apartment in the 1400 block of North South Freeway, near the interchange of interstates 35W and 30, the Fort Worth Star-Telegram reported. The 1-year-old boy died two days later at Cook Children's Medical Center, from blunt force trauma to his head.Although family members first said the boy could've fallen out of his crib, Silva — who was in a relationship with the child's mother — later told police he had punched Armando several times because he was crying, Sgt. R.A. DeHoyos told the newspaper."Silva committed an unspeakable act of violence," said DeHoyos, who leads the department's crimes against children unit.
