Ex-deputy Who Sold Guns He Stole From Evidence Room Gets 15 Months in Prison

A former Ellis County deputy has been sentenced to more than a year in federal prison for stealing guns from the department's evidence room and then selling them.Philip Gary Slaughter of Mesquite was sentenced Friday — his 43rd birthday — to 15 months in prison. He pleaded guilty in May to one count of possession or sale of stolen firearms.Slaughter was arrested in April 2016, not long after he resigned as a criminal investigations division lieutenant.In November 2015, Slaughter received a court order to destroy hundreds of firearms kept in the department's evidence room.   Continue reading...
