NBC 5 / KXAS-TV Monday announced that meteorologist Rick Mitchell will join NBC 5 effective August 22, 2012.

Mitchell has been chief meteorologist at KOCO-TV, Oklahoma City, OK, since 1994.  Previously, he forecasted weather at WOI-TV in Des Moines, IA, and at AccuWeather based in State College, PA.  He earned a bachelor of science degree in meteorology from the University of Nebraska.

He has been recognized for his severe weather forecasting experiences from the Oklahoma Association of Broadcasters and the Associated Press.  Mitchell’s team of meteorologists at KOCO-TV was also recognized by then Oklahoma governor, Frank Keating, for their exceptional work covering tornados in May 1999.

Mitchell’s day-to-day responsibilities and his on-air start date at NBC 5 will be announced in the coming weeks.  He fills a position left vacant when meteorologist Jennifer Lopez left the NBC 5 weather team earlier this year.
