Two-Wombed Woman Gives Birth to Twins

A Michigan woman with two uteruses gives birth to a set of twin girls

Move over, Octo-mom -- you may have 14 kids, but this Michigan mother has twice the equipment.

A Michigan woman with two wombs gave birth this week to a set of twin girls -- one from each uterus, the Mining Journal reported.

Sarah Reinfelder, 21, popped out preemie babies Valerie Marie and Kaylin Joy by Caesarean section seven weeks early Thursday in Marquette, Mich.

"I'm so excited," Reinfelder said after the birth. "I couldn't sleep at all. ... I was just thinking about the girls and how I was so happy they were healthy because nobody knew what to expect."

Reinfelder has a condition called uterus didelphys, and twin births in affected women are rare, doctors said. There have only been three documented cases worldwide of twin births among women with uterus didelphys over the past 40 years, the Mining Journal reported.

Valerie Marie, the larger twin, was born at 4 pounds, 15 ounces from Reinfelder's larger uterus. Kaylin Joy clocked in a pound lighter, at 3 pounds, 15 ounces.

The twins face similar risks that normal prematurely born children do and will likely be hospitalized for about a month to monitor their health. Otherwise, doctors said, the children and their mother are doing fine.

Reinfelder has another son, 10-month-old William, with husband Shane Reinfelder.
