Abilene Christian and Incarnate Word have been invited to join the Southland Conference.

Abilene Christian announced on Monday it had received an invitation. The West Texas university says that if it accepts the invitation as expected, all sports except football would enter league play in 2013. Football would have to wait until 2014 due to already scheduled games.

The school board of trustees is scheduled to discuss the invitation this weekend.

A spokesman with Incarnate Word in San Antonio confirmed Monday that they too had been invited to join Southland Conference and will hold a news conference Monday afternoon.

Both schools are currently members of the Lone Star Conference.

The Southland currently has 11 members.

Officials at the Southland and Lone Star conferences did not immediately return phone messages.
