You knew it was going to happen. It was just a matter of time.
Jordan Spieth finished the third round at the Dean & DeLuca Invitational five shots back of then-leader Webb Simpson. Yet somehow, there was this feeling that Spieth would make his move on Sunday.
And he did.
Spieth caught fire during the final round at Colonial in Fort Worth, shooting a closing 65 that left him tied for second place and just a shot behind champion Kevin Kisner.
“All in all, a very solid round,” said Spieth. “It’s hard to ask for much more than 65 on the last eight to come from behind. It was just too far back to start the day. I was way behind standing on 17 tee box yesterday. So to go 7-under on those last 20 holes out here was fantastic.”
Just as important, The Dallas native regained some confidence and his short game after missing the cut last week at the AT&T Byron Nelson in Irving. All it took was a switch in equipment.

Speith went back to his old trusty Scotty Cameron 009 putter and it made all the difference. He converted 63 of 70 attempts from inside 10 feet, which is huge going into next month’s U.S. Open.
“Very proud of the way we played here, especially with the last two weeks and where I was standing Friday midway through the round this week,” said Spieth. “That was a really fun finish.”
It was Spieth’s best finish since he won the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am in February.
Kisner took the lead on the back nine and never looked back to win the right to wear the plaid jacket at Colonial. Simpson would finish the final round at 8-under.
