Mavs' First Step To Improvement Comes With Keeping Their Own

I can’t help myself from enjoying watching the cocky, dirty Thunder get bitch-slapped by the Spurs.

Not so entertaining is the thought of the Mavs trying to improve their team, by maintaining their team.

Chances are that by June 22 Dirk Nowitzki, Chandler Parsons and Deron Williams – better known as 3/5th of Dallas’ starting lineup – will opt out of their current contracts and technically be NBA free agents. They have all indicated that their first choice is stay with the Mavs, but it’s a tenuous, scary proposition to have your girlfriend on the open market nonetheless.

Nowitzki, true to his word, will indeed re-sign and finish his career in Dallas. Parsons and Williams, however, will likely get legitimate offers to leave. Williams resurrected his career this season and will be one of the top point guards on the market when free agency begins July 1.

Said Williams last week during exit interviews, “I would love to be back. This was a great year for me. My family is settled and happy here, so it’d definitely be great to be back.”

Chances are that all three players are back next season. But it’s far from a slam dunk.
