Dirk Nowitzki Honored With SI Cover, Corned Beef Sandwich

SI cover boy Dirk Nowitzki has been honored by an Ohio deli with a namesake sandwich.

The accolades just keep rolling in for the 2011 NBA Finals MVP, Dirk Nowitzki.

The latest of Nowitzki’s honors? A sandwich and a magazine cover.

Nowitzki is featured on the cover of this week’s issue of Sports Illustrated--not a surprising reveal after the Big German captured the country’s imagination with his fourth quarter heroics and seemingly unstoppable fadeaway jumper. Well that, and the intrigue of his redemption song against a loaded and widely-reviled Heat team.

More surprising, though not all that much more given who Dirk and the Mavericks beat in the Finals, is that Corky and Dennys, a 55-year-old Northern Ohio deli, has named a sandwich after Nowitzki--at least for now.

The deli changed the name of their corned beef sandwich from “The King” to “The Dirk Nowitzki” for the entire month of June. We’re not sure where having a sandwich named after him ranks among, say, being an NBA Champion, a Finals MVP and a Sports Illustrated cover boy, but we’ll guess it’s pretty cool. Aside from that, corned beef is delicious.
