Once upon a time the Cowboys owner held firm with a future Hall-of-Fame running back named Emmitt Smith, refusing to re-work his contract and leading to him missing all of training camp and the first two games of the season. Lesson learned?
Because these days Orlando Scandrick skips the Cowboys’ OTAs and gets a new a contract. Brandon Carr refuses to take a pay cut and gets to play under his existing contract. Rolando McClain refuses to rehab at Valley Ranch and arrives in Oxnard in good standing.
Sure the Cowboys drew a line in the sand in refusing to – in their estimation – overpay NFL leading rusher DeMarco Murray. But, otherwise, it’s been an offseason of the inmates winning a tug-of-war for control of the Asylum.
Jerry is 72 and for a couple camps and counting he’s uttered the philosophy of “I don’t have enough time to not have a good time.” I also believe he thinks this team – coming off a 12-4 season with a playoff win – is closer to the Super Bowl than any of his in the last decade.
Jones is merely finding a balance between being a fiscally responsible businessman and a players’ owner.
