Texas Senators Take Applications for Vacant Courts

The state's two U.S. senators are soliciting applications for potential nominees to six of the seven U.S. district court vacancies in Texas.

One is the court in Texarkana, Texas, that has been vacant since Judge David Folsom retired nearly 1½ years ago.

The Texarkana Gazette reports the vacancy in the Texarkana Division of the U.S. Eastern District of Texas has been deemed an emergency by the Administrative Office of the U.S. Courts.

Emergencies also are declared for another Eastern District vacancy, as well as vacancies in the Southern and Western districts of Texas.

U.S. Sens. John Cornyn and Ted Cruz have created a panel of Texas lawyers to screen candidates. They have set an Aug. 19 deadline for candidates to email completed applications.
