”Kill Switch” Pushed as Solution to Smartphone Thefts

Theft of phones and tablets is now the “fastest-growing street crime” in the country and the incidents are turning more violent, according to the New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman. Americans across the country have been stabbed and mugged at gunpoint for their electronic devices, which are easy to resell, NBC News reported. Schneiderman and San Francisco District Attorney George Gascon are hosting a “Smartphone Summit” on Thursday to ask mobile device manufacturers to solve this “epidemic.” They say phones should include a “kill switch” to make stolen devices inoperable once they are reported stolen. If phones cannot be reactivated, the incentive to steal it would be eliminated, they said. Click through to see what new security measures Apple plans to add to its next iPhone software.
