TXU Energy and the city of Dallas teamed up to unveil the first two electric car charging stations in the city.
The electric stations are located outside Dallas City Hall, on the south side of the building.
Gabe Castro, TXU Energy vice president of business, said the stations will serve customers' growing need for alternative vehicles.
"When we look forward, we know that EVs (electric vehicles) are going to be a part of the future," Castro said. "It's a pretty big opportunity. It's important to us, it's important to our customers, and it's important to the city of Dallas."
Dallas Councilwoman Linda Koop said the city purchased its first alternative fuel vehicle in 1992. Now its fleet consists of more than 2,000 vehicles, making Dallas the largest alternative fuel fleet in Texas and the fifth largest in the nation.
Once the project is complete, Dallas will have a total of five charging stations. The remaining three chargers will be installed at the J. Erik Jonsson Central Library, as well as Dallas Museum of Art's underground public parking structures.
The Dallas City Hall charging stations will be free for the first year.
