Three Rescued Black Bears Get New Texas Home

It has been an exciting day for three North American black bears rescued in east Texas.

On Wednesday, Rowdy, Coco and Toro were able to touch nose-to-nose, feel dirt and grass under their feet, swim and play in a large yard for the first time at PrideRock Wildlife Refuge in Terrell.

The bears were rescued from a neighboring sanctuary that closed late last year.

The approximately 6-year-old bears were raised on cement pads, so having contact with one another and being able to roam around is quite a big deal for them.

"This is a huge accomplishment for PrideRock Wildlife Refuge and we are proud, excited and thrilled," Robyn Wheeler with PrideRock Wildlife Refuge said in a statement. "We have spent several months building this enclosure and all the staff had been waiting anxiously for this day."

The outdoor enclosures include large tunnels for resting, playing, hiding, as well as, pools and several large platforms to soak in the sun.
