Texas Judge Admonished for Facebook Postings Wins Appeal

A judge in Galveston has successfully appealed her judicial admonishment over her Facebook comments about a criminal trial in her court.

The Galveston County Daily News reported Friday that an appeals panel sided with Judge Michelle Slaughter.

Slaughter said her postings did not show bias in the 2014 trial of David Wieseckel and were meant to engage the public.

Wieseckel was accused of keeping his 9-year-old son in a 6-by-8-foot wooden box. Slaughter was removed from the case on a defense motion. A replacement judge declared a mistrial. Wieseckel was later acquitted of unlawful restraint of a child.

The State Commission on Judicial Conduct in April publicly admonished Slaughter.

Three appeals court judges decided Wednesday that no evidence showed removing Slaughter was the result of any violation in her court.
