TX Board of Education Opens 3-Day Meeting

The State Board of Education convenes for its first meeting since November's election reshaped its ranks.

The election, however, did little to change its heavily Republican makeup.

Wednesday kicks off three days of meetings and featuring seven new board members. Dallas Republican Geraldine Miller is returning after losing her re-election bid in 2010. In all, the board has 10 Republicans and five Democrats.

The meeting will feature remarks by Texas Education Commissioner Michael Williams, and see board members draw straws to see if they'll serve 2- or 4-year terms.

Republican Barbara Cargill of The Woodlands is the board's chairwoman, but members will choose a vice chairman and secretary.
