A stolen sport utility vehicle hit a Northlake police officer Saturday morning after he pulled the vehicle over on a traffic stop.

Investigators said Officer Kevin Urtle stopped the vehicle in Justin at about 10:15 a.m. He placed the two men inside in handcuffs. As Urtle was taking the passenger David Gibbs, to his squad car, the driver, Rodney Womack, slipped his hands forward and drove off in the SUV.

The officer ran after the vehicle and was hit.

Police said Womack later crashed in Wise County and was arrested.

Urtle sustained broken ribs and is expected to recover.

Womack faces charges of aggravated assault on a peace officer and stolen vehicle. Gibbs also faces stolen vehicle charges.
