Irving Man Faces Capital Murder Charges in Death of Stepson

An Irving man is facing capital murder charges in the death of his 2-year-old stepson.

The Irving Police Department issued a warrant for the arrest of Michael David Mercado Friday.

Officials said Mercado's stepson, Dionicio Mendoza was transported to Children's Medical Center Dallas after Mercado called 911 saying Mendoza had a seizure. The hospital diagnosed Mendoza with life threatening internal injuries and placed him on a ventilator.

According to the Irving Police Department, Mercado was alone with Mendoza from 10:30 a.m. to the time the ambulance was called at 3 p.m. During this time, he inflicted serious bodily injury to the victim.

Police said Mendoza was pronounced dead at the hospital Friday.
