Garland police say a homeowner shot a burglar, sending him to the hospital where he later died.

Police said they got a call that a man was breaking in to a home in the 2600 block of Richland Drive Thursday.

The homeowner told police he was awakened by the sound of breaking glass in his living room and grabbed his pistol. The homeowner told police he saw a man climbing through the broken window and fearing for his safety, he fired one shot at the man.

Police found evidence at the scene that indicated the man had been shot.

Shortly after the 911 call, police said the burglar -- Jason Richardson -- checked into the emergency room at Baylor Hospital of Garland, he suffered a gunshot wound.

Richardson was treated and transferred to Parkland Hospital in Dallas and while there undergoing further medical treatment, police said he died.
