Georgetown Officer Who Tripped Students Suspended

A Central Texas police officer seen on video tripping and pushing students during a soccer game celebration has been suspended 40 days without pay.

The Georgetown Police Department on Wednesday announced the punishment for Officer George Bermudez. He has five days to accept the penalty or face indefinite suspension over the April 19 incident.

Police Chief Wayne Nero says the officer's actions were excessive and unwarranted.

Students jumped from the stands and rushed the field after the Vandegrift High School girls team won a state championship by beating Wylie East High School.

Bermudez was put on paid administrative leave after cellphone and other video showed him tripping a boy, grabbing another student and pushing two girls.

No publicly listed phone number could be located Thursday for Bermudez.
