Flower Mound Softball Coach Risks Record to Give Players their Prom Night

Coach Mark Larriba said a call to give up most of his starting roster Saturday night was no tough call at all, as it gave his players a shot at their senior prom.

Flower Mound High School’s softball game versus Plano West was postponed due to a rain delay last week and rescheduled for Saturday night, the same night as prom.

A win in the game would have put the Lady Jaguars in the top seed going into the playoffs, Larriba said. But instead, his staff decided the big senior event was where his girls deserved to be.

"Coach Burkhardt and I just talked a little bit and said, 'let 'em go, let them have the experience,'” said Larriba. “We didn't even think twice about it, we said 'yeah go ahead,' and they were like in shock."

In place of the 14 players excused, the team alternated in several younger girls from the junior varsity squad. Larriba said he was glad to give those girls an opportunity in the big game and was pleased with the skill they showed that night.

The team was defeated 10-0, but Larriba and Assistant Coach Ali Burkhardt said they’d make the same call again.

Flower Mound, despite the loss, has still clinched the division 6-6A title and will go to the playoffs.
