It happened just before 8 a.m. Thursday in the 2400 block of Stonegate Street.

One woman was inside the home when the fire started.

She ran out of the house and into her backyard. A passerby, who had seen the smoke then helped break through the fence around her home so she could escape.

Firefighters arrived on scene minutes later.

The fire started at the home in the 2400 block of Stonegate Street in Arlington just before 8 a.m. A vehicle parked in front of the home was also briefly on fire.

Officials say the fire began in the garage of the home, where the woman had left a space heater running for her three dogs and her cat. All four animals died.

The fire grew so intense at one point, firefighters were pulled out from the home and were forced to attack it from the outside.

Officials say the fire caused extensive damage to the home.

The woman is okay and is staying with family in the area.
