Allen police say a wrong-way driver on the Sam Rayburn Tollway was killed in a crash that closed northbound lanes of the toll road early Wednesday morning.
According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, officers spotted a Honda Accord traveling southbound in the northbound lanes of the toll road at about 3:17 a.m.
Officers called for units ahead of the vehicle to intercept it. But the driver exited at entry ramps, drove in the wrong direction on the service roads and then re-entered the toll road on the exits.
Before officers could intercept the vehicle south of Legacy Drive in Plano, the Accord slammed head-on into a Ford F-150 pickup truck. The impact pinned the wrong-way driver inside her Accord.
The driver, a woman in her 20s, died at the scene. Police have not released her name because her family has not yet been identified.
The driver of the F-150, a woman in her 20s, was airlifted to Plano Medical Center in serious condition. She is expected to survive.
DPS troopers reopened the northbound lanes of the toll road at about 7 a.m. Wednesday.
