Farmers Branch is one step closer to cutting ties with the Dallas Independent School District.

City council members voted 4-1 Tuesday night to move forward in creating the Farmers Branch Independent School District.

Currently, the city's students go to schools in the Dallas and Carrollton-Farmers Branch ISD.

Mayor Tim O'Hare said the change would unite the community.

"I think it's the right thing to do, at least looking at it and seeing if the city could pull it off," said O'Hare.

A non-binding referendum will go to voters in May.
