Family of Boy Killed During Driver's Training Want Answers

Dozens of people gathered Sunday at a candlelight vigil Sunday to share memories of a 12-year-old boy killed Friday night when he was run over by a teen learning how to drive.

Neighbors told NBC 5 that Erick Lozano was walking with friends and a cousin in a neighborhood in the 1700 block of Bunker Hill Lane. Across the street, police said a 16-year-old neighbor placed her family’s vehicle in reverse and accelerated out of the driveway, crossed the road and slammed into Lozano, pinning him against a nearby home.

Lozano was taken to the hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. His 10-year-old cousin was also injured.

β€œHe was a great kid and everyone loved him. As you can see tonight, everyone loved my baby,” said Elsa Lozano, the boy’s grandmother. β€œSomeone should be responsible for what happened to him.β€œ

According to police the teen driver's father was teaching her to drive and had told her to start the car before the two left the house.

Lewisville police have assigned a fatality investigator to the case while the Lozano family continues to ask for justice. At this time, police have not said what charges, if any, the unlicensed juvenile driver may face.

The Lozano family did not immediately have funeral plans to share.
