Earl Makes Landfall, Downgraded to Tropical Storm

Hurricane Earl made landfall near Belize City early Thursday morning as a Category 1 storm before weakening to a Tropical Storm.

Winds were about 80 mph at 7 a.m. U.S. Central time. The biggest threat in the coming days for Belize, Honduras, Guatemala and the Yucatan Peninsula will be flash flooding and mudslides.

Earl is forecast to be downgraded to a tropical depression Thursday night or Friday morning.

The good newsโ€” there are no other tropical systems in the Atlantic.

In the Pacific, Tropical storm Ivette continues to move west. Ivette may strengthen into a hurricane by Friday, but will then weaken in cooler waters before reaching Hawaii.
