Dallas, Fort Worth Vying for New Toyota, Mazda Plant

Friday, Japanese-automakers Toyota and Mazda announced a partnership in a $1.6 billion manufacturing plant in the United States.

It prompted a tweet from President Donald Trump who said it was "a great investment in American manufacturing!"

Toyota officially opened its new North American headquarters in Plano in July.

The company has factories and offices in 10 states.

The location of the new facility has not been determined.

Mayors of Dallas and Fort Worth have already expressed interest.

“We will work to understand their needs and will roll out the red carpet for them,” Dallas Mayor Mike Rawlings said in a statement.

"Certainly, if there's an opportunity we will [go after it],” Fort Worth Mayor Betsy Price told NBC 5.

Since Toyota announced its relocation from California to Plano three years ago, the company has changed the city’s landscape in more ways than one.

“Toyota was absolutely a game-changer,” Plano Mayor Harry LaRosiliere said.

The move ignited a growth boom that placed Plano on the global economic map.

The new manufacturing facility will bring 4,000 new jobs to whichever U.S. city gets it.

It’s the same amount Toyota will bring to Plano.

LaRosiliere said he thinks it is unlikely Toyota will decide to build its new facility in Plano because the city doesn’t have industrial real estate like Dallas or Fort Worth.

He says he’ll support any city vying for the deal.

“If it's a win for Dallas, it's a win for Plano. It’s all about regional efforts. If we can help them we will. If we can't get it then we want them to have it,” he said.

A spokesperson for the city of Frisco told NBC 5 in a statement, “It’s not our practice to confirm or deny any of level of involvement in any potential economic development projects.”

McKinney Mayor George Fuller said economic developments are confidential but added, “McKinney is prime for continued business growth and we are always proactively pursuing conversations with progressive employers like Toyota/Mazda.”

A safe city, great schools and terrific city services are qualities that LaRosiliere says helped him bring Toyota to Plano.

The new manufacturing plant is scheduled to be operational in 2021.
