DISD Kindergartners to go Half-Day During First Week of Class

Classes begin for students in the Dallas Independent School District on Aug. 23, and most, but not all, will attend full-day classes.

The district's kindergartners will attend class from 8 a.m. to noon during the week of Aug. 23-27.  All pre-kindergarten classes will begin a week later, on Monday, Aug. 30, and follow the regular class schedule.

"The half-days for kindergartners will allow teachers time to process enrollment forms and meet with students' families during the afternoon. It also provides the students with a transitional period to allow them to adjust to elementary school," the district said in a news release Wednesday.

The later start time also provides more time for schools to determine which students qualify for services, administer assessments and prioritize applications to ensure that eligible students are enrolled in classes.

To qualify for pre-kindergarten, a child must be 4-years-old on Sept. 1 of the current school year and be unable to speak and comprehend English; or be educationally disadvantaged; or be a dependent of an active-duty, uniformed member of the military or of a military parent who is missing in action or deceased; or be a foster child.
