Crews have started to widen a Southeast Texas port to make way for bigger ships and more traffic.
Project manager Freeport LNG Development LP and Port Freeport on Tuesday announced work has begun on the $30 million project to widen the harbor channel.
Freeport LNG in August reached an agreement with Illinois-based Great Lakes Dredge & Dock Company LLC to widen the entrance and jetty sections from the current 400 feet to 600 feet. Officials say the dredging is not expected to interfere with ongoing shipping.
The work is to be completed next May.
Freeport LNG owns and operates a regasification terminal near Freeport and is developing a nearby gas liquefaction and LNG export project.
