Construction Relief in Sight For Holiday Travelers – Next Year

Count your blessings.

This may be the last Thanksgiving Day weekend that drivers will have to battle traffic through two big construction projects in North Texas.

“It’s a struggle. It’s a beat down," said Derek King of Denton.

The construction stretching 28 miles along Interstate 35E from Interstate 635 to Denton should be finished by this time next year.

“I’m excited about that and thankful once it does get done,” said King.

“I am definitely looking forward to next year this time and enjoying being able to drive all lanes, so I can’t wait,” said Melissa Aguilar of Carrollton. "I try to just remind myself to stay calm and do what I’ve got to do without any altercations whatsoever."

The massive Horseshoe Project in downtown Dallas is also expected to be finished before next Thanksgiving, and the first phase of a new parking garage at Dallas Love Field will provide 1,000 new parking spaces there.

Two other big road projects - the Midtown Express along Highway 183 and the North Tarrant Express on Interstate 35W - won’t be completed for another two years, but should be ready in time for Thanksgiving Day, 2018.

Holiday travelers are taking the construction delays in stride.

“I have many blessings, a lot to be thankful for for Thanksgiving," said Candy Sprabary of Carrollton.

Nearly four million people in Texas are expected to drive at least 50 miles this weekend, many of them navigating road construction projects along the way.

“I’ll avoid that and be thankful I’m not in it,” said Mark Jones of Carrollton.
