Arlington Jail Employees Face Discipline in Inmate's Death

Arlington police announced discipline Monday evening against four jailers following the death of an inmate in a case that has already resulted in grand jury indictments against two jail employees.

Jonathan Paul, 42, was arrested in March and died days after he was restrained at the Arlington city jail in an incident recorded on surveillance video.

Three jail employees have now been fired, and a sergeant has been suspended for five days, the city announced. Another jail employee retired during the investigation.

Among the fired employees is Pedro Medina, who, along the with now-retired Stephen Schmidt, faces an indictment for criminally negligent homicide.

The fired employees can appeal to try and get their jobs back, the city said.

Arlington police investigated a total of 10 employees for their role in Paul's death, and five of them were exonerated.
