A malfunctioning air-conditioner has led to the deaths of 10 dogs that were being transported to West Texas to train with customs officers.
The handlers for the German shepherds and Belgian Malinois made the grim discovery Monday while en route from a kennel in Denver, Ind., to the Fort Bliss Army post.
Two other dogs were treated for dehydration and heat exhaustion, while five others appeared to be fine. It's not clear what kind of carrier they were riding in.
They were bound for a canine center at the post and then were to be screened for use by U.S. Customs and Border Protection.
Fort Bliss spokesman Maj. Joe Buccino told the El Paso Times that the dogs "were essentially in an oven," and described the incident as "horrifying."
