Fort Worth Railroad Intersection to be Rebuilt

Officials say a congested freight railroad intersection in Fort Worth called Tower 55 should be rebuilt by early 2014.

On Thursday afternoon, U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood will be in Fort Worth to officially sign the agreement to rebuild. Work is set to begin in April on the $91 million project.

While the federal grant of $34 million in transportation funding was announced about a year ago, the work hadn't started because those involved hadn't finalized a construction agreement. That step will happen Thursday.

The Fort Worth Star-Telegram reports that the project includes construction of a new track and a makeover of several dangerous railroad crossings in inner-city neighborhoods.

Fort Worth-based BNSF and Omaha, Neb.-based Union Pacific Railroad are contributing a combined $51 million toward the project.
