360,000 Costco Motion-Sensor Trash Cans Recalled

Thousands of motion-sensor trash cans sold exclusively online and at Costco stores have been recalled because they pose a laceration hazard, according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission.

The recall extends to about 367,000 trash cans made by EKO USA. The laceration risk focuses on the black plastic protective collar in the opening on the back of the product. This protective collar can dislodge and expose a sharp edge, the company said.

The company received 13 reports of laceration injuries, according to the CPSC.

The trash cans are about 31 inches tall and 14 inches square. They hold 21 gallons of trash and the lid is battery powered.

The trash cans were sold nationwide in Costco stores and at Costco.com between December 2013 and June 2015 for about $50. Costco is notifying customers who purchased the trash cans directly.

Anyone who has the product was asked to return it to Costco for a full refund, or contact EKO for a free repair kit with a redesigned black plastic protective collar and installation instructions.
