Suspicious Package Near SMU Not a Threat: University

A suspicious package found near SMU's Fondren Library late Monday morning was determined to not pose a threat, school officials say.

Students, faculty and visitors to the Southern Methodist University campus were asked to stay away from the library after a package described as a plastic bowl wrapped in black plastic was spotted under a shrub on the library's west side..

SMU tweeted an alert at 11:51 a.m. asking people to stay away while the device was investigated. About an hour later, at 12:43 p.m., school officials tweeted the package was not a threat to public safety and issued an all clear.

Students are expected to begin moving into the campus on Wednesday for the fall semester.
