Russell Crowe to Be “The Equalizer”

Never one to let a trend die peacefully, the Hollywood Machine is firing up yet another '80s reboot, a big-screen adaptation of short-lived series "The Equalizer," with Russell Crowe poised to take the title role, according to 24 Frames.

All grumbling aside, "The Equalizer," which starred Edward Woodward ("Breaker Morant") as shadowy former spy-turned-vigilante who protected the people of New York from all manner of evil, was awesome. Folks in peril would contact him via his newspaper ad, which read, "Got a problem? Odds against you? Call the Equalizer."

The Equalizer, aka Robert McCall, was, in the British tradition, both a proper gentleman and an all-around bad dude, who drove a Jaguar XJ6 and attracted a shocking number of future stars during his four-year run, including Macaulay Culkin, Melissa Joan Hart, Christian Slater, Kevin Spacey, John Goodman, Joe Morton, Vincent D'Onofrio, Luis Guzman, Bradley Whitford, Laurence Fishburne, Patricia Clarkson, Laurie Metcalf, Oliver Platt, Patricia Richardson, William H. Macy, Steve Buscemi, Chris Cooper, David Strathairn, Cynthia Nixon, Ving Rhames, Amanda Plummer, Tony Shalhoub, and Stanley Tucci.

On top of all that, the show featured one of the great TV themes, "THe Equalizer Busy Equalizing," by former Police drummer Stewart Copeland, who also made a cameo on th eshow as a pickpocket.

It's been nearly a decade since Crowe had an honest-to-god hit on his hands, it would be totally sweet if "The Equalizer" could save him, too.
