Franchise Tag Deadline Coming on Monday

Teams have until 3 PM CT on Monday to apply the franchise tag

After around two weeks of discussing the franchise tag, the time for action is approaching quickly for the Dallas Cowboys if they plan to use the tag on Dez Bryant, as everyone thinks they will.

The deadline to apply the tag is set for 3 PM central time on Monday.

Bryant stated publicly last year that he would be more than a little disappointed if the Cowboys franchise him, but the Cowboys have been open in stating that there’s a very good chance that that’s exactly what they’ll do.

I’ve never seen anybody just pout to the extent that they wouldn’t do it over this kind of money,” said owner and general manager Jerry Jones, per ESPN Dallas. “That usually is not realistic. It’s just too much money. And consequently it’s not set up or packaged the way that parties might want--and I want to emphasize again--it’s not really set up in our best interest at all. There’s a much better way for our future and our cap this year if we didn’t franchise, but this is here when you don’t have your meeting of the minds about how you want to structure something long term. And so if anything it’s in the right situation, it’s a placeholder for addressing it as you move through the future.”

If the Cowboys go ahead and franchise Bryant, they’ll have until July 15 to come to an agreement on a long-term deal. If they can’t do that, Bryant would play out the 2015 season under the tag.
