Rookie receiver Dez Bryant, after dazzling coaches and reporters on the second day of this weekend's three-day rookie mini-camp, suffered an injury on the third. While running a deep route at Cowboys Stadium on Sunday, Bryant twisted his ankle and ran gingerly back to the huddle.
The injury, which kept him from running sprints with the team, would signal the end of Bryant's first weekend with the Cowboys; but it seems a strong impression was made.
Head coach Wade Phillips said that the twisted ankle was a non-issue on Sunday before launching into an ode to the young man's promise.
"Dez Bryant is an absolute talent, you don't see that many come in and look that good that early," Phillips said, per Clarence Hill of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. "In 33 years (of coaching), there's not very many that I can say look that talented at their position for a three-day period."
The coach was not the only one impressed with the 24th overall pick. Michael Irvin, who showed up at Valley Ranch on Saturday, called Bryant a "natural receiver" and praised his work ethic. Receivers coach Ray Sherman added after practice Saturday, "The sky's the limit for this kid."
Phillips said that Bryant would be ready for organized team activities toward the end of May.
