In 2013, Cowboys defensive lineman started an unfortunate, season-long trend for the team’s defensive front when he tore his Achilles tendon on the first day of training camp, ending his season before it started. He had successful surgery back in July of last year, and enters this season as a possible replacement for defensive tackle Jason Hatcher, who will likely depart in free agency.
“The good thing about Crawford is that he's versatile,” said Cowboys vice president Stephen Jones, per ESPN Dallas. “I think he could be an under tackle. I think he could be a left end. That was unfortunately a tough one that we lost. We thought he was going to be player No. 5 for us that could be versatile and play a lot of snaps.”
So it’s safe to say the Cowboys are feeling optimistic about Crawford. But new defensive coordinator Rod Marinelli said he’ll have to see the third-year Boise State product on the field--a chance he never got last year, his first in Dallas--before he knows what he’s working with.
“You've got to see the guy move,” Marinelli said. “I haven't had the chance to do much with him other than OTAs, so a guy like that we've got to kind of get him started because he's got the ability to move inside and outside.”
